Chapter 8-1

Hi, the name's Indigo. I'm currently 18 years old and finishing up my senior year of high school (hallelujah!). I'm so ready to be out of that school. The students are all a bunch of jerks that like to pick on everyone that isn't a part of their squad. I'm a computer geek, planning on making a living doing programming after I graduate. I'm the youngest child, and only daughter, of five kids, and it sucks. All of my siblings have moved on and I'm stuck at home with the folks. I love them, don't get me wrong, but they have smothered me my entire life, and I'm ready to live my own life. Being forced to be the heir of the family isn't fun either, considering I never wanted children. But now, it looks like I'll have to have at least one baby. Trust me, I'm putting that off as long as possible.

Today was the day the youngest of my brothers, Viridian moved out. I was sad to see him go. Out of my brothers, he was the one I am closest to, probably because we're the closest in age.

Viridian: I'm gonna miss you, sis. I'll be sure to come and visit. Keep in touch, okay?
Indigo: You got it. Good luck with college, bro. Love you.

With only one week left of classes, I've been studying my ass off to make sure I'll pass my final exams. After that, I'm free of this place for good. Today at school, however, one of the boys in my grade named Huckleberry, decided to try and strike up a conversation with me while I was trying to study. I was so not in the mood for his crap. He has always been an odd guy, not really fitting in anywhere, and always trying to talk to me. Talk about annoying.

Huckleberry: Hey, Indigo. How's it going?
Indigo: What do you want? Can't you see I'm busy?
Huckleberry: I just wanted to chat. You always look so lonely.
Indigo: I'm fine, now please leave me alone. I'm trying to study.

Huckleberry: Come on, Indi, I'm sure you'll do great on your exams, don't stress. You wanna go do something? Get your mind off of school for a little while?
Indigo: No, now go away!
Huckleberry: Why not?
Indigo: I'm busy, and you're arrogant and immature.
Huckleberry: Fine, have it your way. Good luck. Just remember that you're missing out on all this. *gestures to himself*
Indigo: I'll survive. Goodbye, Huck.

Thank God that's over. Now back to studying.

Two years later.

I've been working at this agency since after graduation, and I love it. I do programming for the company's website, and I don't have to deal with people, just how I like it. Lately, however, I've been having to work later because of a big 'special project' that the company has recruited me to help out with. So instead of getting out during daylight hours, I'm usually at the office until around 9PM.

I'm usually the last one to leave, tonight is no different. I made sure the doors were locked, and turned to start walking home. Gotta get some exercise after sitting at a desk all day. It is beautiful out tonight.

I turn to start my walk home, enjoying the nice cool weather. It was a nice change to the hot, humid, weather we've been having lately.

Suddenly, a man comes up from somewhere behind me, scaring the shit out of me. He starts to put his hands around me. His breath reeks of alcohol, indicating that he probably just left the bar down the street.

Man: Hey, girlie, how are you tonight? You're a pretty little thing aren't you?
Indigo: Please don't touch me.
Man: Why not, baby? You look lonely. I just wanted to give you a little company.
Indigo: No thank you, I'm not interested.
Man: Come on, I'll show you a good time.

He drapes his arm around my shoulder and tries to pull me towards him.

Indigo: Get OFF of me!

He keeps touching me. Now, I'm getting very uncomfortable, way more than I already was. What is he going to do to me? He's too much bigger than I am for me to push him off, but I still try, failing miserably.

Then, out of nowhere, another man comes running up and pushes the creep away from me. It took me a minute, but I now realized that I knew the man. It was Huck. What's he doing here?

Overwhelmed and hysterical, I step back and watch as the two throw punches at each other. Huck moves really fast and is able to dodge the drunk man's punches.

Finally the drunk man gives up, tired, and he takes off running as fast as his drunken body would let him.

Huck: You better run, asshole! Don't let me catch you around here again! *turns to Indigo* Are you alright? He didn't hurt you, did he?
Indigo: I-I'm okay, just shook up. Why are you here?
Huck: I was going for a jog, it's so nice out so I thought I'd take advantage of it.

Indigo: *starts crying*
Huck: Indi, what's wrong? What did he do to you?
Indigo: He kept touching me, and trying to force himself on me. I-I don't know what he would have done if you hadn't shown up.
Huck: What a creep. *comforting Indigo* It's okay Indi, he's gone. If he comes back, I'll kick his ass.
Indigo: T-Thanks Huck, I really appreciate it.

I pull him into a hug and he put his arms around me. It's the least I could do to repay him for saving me. I was reeling from what just happened, and stayed in his arms for longer than I probably should have. I don't know him that well, besides the short conversations we had in school, mostly ones of me telling him to f*** off.

Huck: Just to be safe, I'll help you get home. You never know if he'll decide to try it again.
Indigo: If you insist. Thanks again.
Huck: Anytime.

He puts his arm around me in a protective gesture, and walks me home. It was nice being in his arms. I felt a strange sense of comfort. Maybe he isn't so bad after all. He seems to have matured a lot in the two years since graduation. We reach my house and I thank him once again. Before he leaves, he turns to me.

Huck: Hey, Indi, if you get out this late again, call me or something and I'll escort you home. You shouldn't be outside alone so late anymore. Here, I'll give you my number.
Indigo:  Sounds great, Huck. I'll see you around?
Huck: Yeah, I'll see ya.

And I did see him, quite a bit actually. I was getting out late two to three times a week, and each time Huck met me outside to walk me home. It was really sweet, actually. I never pinned him for the type to be so selfless.

On our walks home, I learned a lot about him. He's working on his business degree at the local college, and is into some of the same geeky stuff that I am. I was surprised that we had so much in common. Every time around him, I feel so safe, like nothing can harm me, and I get butterflies in my stomach.

Is it possible that I'm falling for him?
